# What does “meta” mean in Star Trek Online?

In Star Trek Online, **meta** is short for **metagame**: the standards players use to compare and optimise builds beyond simply completing content. It is not an official list of “best” gear.

## What does STO meta mean?

In STO, when players talk about **the meta**, they usually mean performance-focused PvE build optimisation — especially DPS measured on benchmark maps. Tanks can be judged by separate measures such as how much incoming fire they draw for the team.

## Is there one best meta build in STO?

**No.** What is “best” depends on the goal, build type, map, team, budget and piloting. A build optimised for a particular DPS benchmark is not automatically the best choice for every TFO, role or player. STO BETTER likewise describes maximum optimisation as expensive and scenario-specific.
